Mission & Philosophy

The mission of St. Catherine of Academy is to educate young women to develop their feminine genius—their unique dignity, identity, gifts as women created in the image of God.

The Mission entrusted to us:  to awaken in young women their feminine genius by nurturing a sense of self—academically, socially, and spiritually—and instilling in them a confidence to claim their inheritance as daughters of God.

Our Philosophy:  We believe this culture reduces women’s true dignity by valuing them for their physical beauty or material success.  Instead, we believe in bringing to life the many gifts God has given to each woman which are so necessary for the health and prosperity of our culture. We are a Roman Catholic life-preparatory academy, rooted in the teachings of St. John Paul II who coined the phrase the feminine genius and taught the importance of giving women the freedom to be authentic in their femininity.  This means we strive to stretch both the mind and heart of each young woman who walks through our doors.  Academically, we challenge our students in a rigorous college preparatory program which prizes excellence and an integration of faith with reason.  A focus is placed on rhetoric and analysis of content in a real world application. We also provide opportunities for experiential learning in service to the metro-Detroit community, pilgrimages and mission trips.

The Values we want each young woman to have:

Faith:  a personal relationship with Jesus based on an encounter with Him

Hope:  trust in the providence of God and a vision for her future in the world of work, home, and society

Love: love of self, neighbor, and God

Intelligence:  an integration of her reason with faith resulting in academic excellence and moral intellectual thought

Confidence:   intrinsic dignity as a woman, empowering her to use her unique talents and gifts

Integrity: a well formed conscience knowing moral Truth and acting upon it

Holiness:  a desire for improvement as a daughter of God, willing to admit fault and working to correct it

Generosity:  giving of self without counting the cost

Mission:   a missionary heart, striving to better society and the people she meets with the love of Jesus

Our Future Graduates are prepared to: set the world ablaze with a heart for the Gospel and a sound mind for medicine, politics, education, social work, science, business, music, the arts and all other avenues to which a young woman feels called.

“This school is not only college prep, it is life prep. I know that my daughter is being educated to go out and make a positive difference in the world. She will graduate with the confidence and courage to lead wherever she goes in life. I love the principal, the teachers, and the families. It is such a blessing to be a part of the SCA Family. I know the friends my daughter has made will be her sisters for life.”

“I LOVE this school. The teachers are excellent. Because the students are so friendly, it’s easy to fit in and make friends even if you have had a tough time at other schools. There is virtually no bullying and it is a very friendly, positive environment. Highly recommended.”

“My family has had an excellent experience at this school so far. Beyond the beautiful new facility, I have been impressed with the teachers and the administration! They challenge the girls both academically and spiritually, they know them by name, and appear to have a genuine concern for each individual student. The school really feels like a family. As a parent, it is a blessing to me to know that my daughter is in such good hands when I drop her off everyday.”

“The school lives up to their mission statement by unlocking the feminine genius in the girls who go there and providing us with the opportunity to discover who we are meant to be.”

“Karen Ervin is a remarkable principal! She is a good administrator, but even more importantly, she is an excellent role model for the students. She is strong, confident, and a woman of tremendous virtue. She is unafraid and doing everything in her power to raise strong, Catholic women who will go out and ‘set the world ablaze’!”

“I was among one of the very first classes SCA ever had. As a pioneer and a student to be a part of the foundation of clubs and classes that continue today, I am beyond proud of how far the school has come. There were many ups and downs during my four years but an amazing experience overall. Today at college I still look back on and cherish my times at SCA, thankful for the connections, education and sisterhood I acquired. I am looking forward to seeing many more young women carry on the traditions my class and recent classes have set for the future.”

Alumna, Class of '14

“This high school experience is like none other you can get anywhere. There is joy and comradery and the girls are happy and excel. They are being supported and encouraged by staff. You can watch a girl come in who had a bad experience elsewhere, bloom here and become a different girl in a short time. Can’t say enough good about it. Thank God the founders had this vision and followed through with it. Well needed and we are very thankful!”

“SCA proves you can educate young women to both get into Heaven and Harvard!”

“Beautiful school!”

“Another thing I enjoyed about the school was the athletics. I played four different sports at this school and I had the same experience with all of them. The coaches really cared about me, not just how well I was performing and I was treated respectfully on and off the court. Further more, I felt that I was really being pushed physically and mentally during practice which I value in any activity.”
