“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
~ John 14:15
Sunday’s Gospel circles back to earlier days, with Jesus continuing to deliver his “Farewell Discourse” (Chapters 14-17), preparing his disciples for his departure and their reception of the Holy Spirit. A common thread or theme throughout is that of “love” and tying love to obedience. Jesus tells his disciples that their love for Him will be shown by their obedience to Him, by following his commandments. Jesus not only taught us how to love but showed us. For him, love meant putting other people’s interests before his own. He made time for people, cared for them, listened to them, and even cured them. He came to serve, not to be served. He taught us to forgive each other, even forgiving those who crucified Him. His love for us involved generously giving of himself and was not self-serving. The same must be true for us; Jesus should be our role model.
Let us Pray
Loving God,
You call me to love others in the same way you love me.
That is where the faith you have given me
offers me the hope to believe that you pour out your love on me.
Bring me into your marvelous light
and help me to be fruitful in this world and to care for those
who are forgotten and discarded.
Help me to love as you love.
Amen
