Today we honor all those women and men who have served in the armed forces during war and peacetime, and this is our moment to thank living veterans for their service and sacrifices. For generations, men and women have served each one of us, unselfishly, courageously, and steadfastly in the armed forces. Unlike other federal holidays (which are celebrated on Mondays), Veterans Day is held on November 11, on whatever day of the week it falls. This day was originally called “Armistice Day” because an armistice (a temporary cessation of fighting) went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month – November 11, 1918 – during World War I. Armistice Day was officially recognized* on May 13, 1938, honoring World War I veterans and making November 11 a federal holiday. In 1954, the original legislation was amended to change the holiday’s name to Veterans Day, allowing the nation to recognize, honor, and salute all American veterans.

Loving Father, bless our veterans and all who serve our nation defending our freedom.
For those who bravely gave their lives, grant them eternal rest.
For those who are serving, give them courage.
For those who served, we offer our gratitude.
We ask this through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

*President Wilson proclaimed the commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: 

To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”
