When Irish Eyes are Smiling
Gaelic League of Detroit
March 12, 2023
Earlier this month we learned that Bridget Grumm, SCA ’21, was selected as the Queen of the Detroit United Irish Societies for the 2023-2024 year. The organization (established in 1959), annually holds a competition for young women of Irish descent to help educate the next generation about their Irish heritage, provide leadership opportunities, and empower women in the Michigan community. This honor comes with a scholarship and a trip to Ireland as part of the overall experience, in addition to appearance all over metropolitan Detroit.
The Ancient Order of Hibernians, an all-female group that is part of the Detroit United Irish Societies, recently concluded its 55th annual St. Brigid Hibernian Scholarship Program. On February 18, senior Brigid Hegarty won first place in the competition, for which she completed an extensive application, was interviewed by a panel of judges, and then took questions from the audience. Brigid now becomes part of the Court of St. Brigid, of which Bridget Grumm is the Queen.
Bridget and Brigid attended the St. Patrick’s Day Mass at Most Holy Trinity in Corktown on Sunday, March 12 @ 10:30 AM sitting atop a float at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, at 1:00 PM on March 12.
“My name is Bridget Grumm, and I am so honored to be a part of this extraordinary experience and represent the Queen of Detroit United Irish Societies this year!
My grandmother and her sisters immigrated to Detroit from Castlebar, County Mayo, Ireland. I am so excited to travel to County Cork and visit my family in Co Mayo this summer! I was an Irish dancer for many years at the Tim O’Hare School of Irish Dance, and I still love to ceili dance when I have the chance. I am a sophomore at MSU studying to become a Physician’s Assistant and am a member of the MSU Physician’s Assistant Club and Chi Omega Sorority. There are so many exciting events ahead and I’m looking forward to celebrating my heritage and representing the QDUIS!”
