SCA Students Shine at Copley Latin Day
On April 2nd, three of our Honors Latin III and IV students—Beatrice Dinverno, Katia Lopez, and Emily Mahon—traveled to the University of Michigan for the 11th annual Copley Latin Day. The day focused on, 'The Art of Leisure', explored the dynamic relationship between otium (leisure) and negotium (work or business) in ancient Rome.
Throughout the day, our Stars engaged in hands-on activities that brought classical concepts to life. They discovered how 4th-century poet Optatian used versus intexti (in-woven verses) to create visual poetry, and they even designed their own Roman mosaics, gaining insight into their artistic and cultural significance.

The highlight of the event? Senior Emily Mahon earned Magna Cum Laude honors for her impressive Latin work, including three haikus written in Latin meter (!!) and her masterful recitations of Vergil’s Georgics and Petronius’ Satyricon.
Congratulations to Beatrice, Katia, and Emily for representing SCA with excellence and passion for the classics! Gratias tibi ago maxime to Ms. Molly Rose Powers for guiding our students on this incredible academic adventure!
