Feast of the Guardian Angels
“See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for in heaven their angels behold the face of My Father.” (Matthew 18:10)
Today we recognize the role of guardian angels in our lives. Parents are comforted in the belief that their children are protected from dangers real and imagined by angels. Through the ages and dating all the way back to the 11th Century, we have grown to understand that guardian angels represent us before God, watch over us, and aide us in our prayer lives.
Pope John XXIII, in his Meditation for the Feast of the Guardian Angels wrote, “We must remember how admirable was the intention of divine Providence in entrusting to the angels the mission of watching over all mankind, and over individual human beings, lest they should fall victims to the grave dangers which they encounter.” Earthly fathers have the role of protecting and guiding their children on earth. Our heavenly Father has charged his angels to be a part of our earthly journey.
Though taught to children, the guardian angel prayer can be said by everyone, as all of us have guardian angels who love us dearly and who have been specifically assigned to us, suited to the person God has created us to be. It is up to us to invite them into our lives. If we allow them, our guardian angels will work in our lives, watching and guiding us.
“Angel of God, my Guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this night be at my side to light, to guard, to rule and guide.”
