Update: Expanded Learning Opportunities Outside the Classroom
Updated 10/20/2024
Since the time of the original writing, our students at St. Catherine of Siena Academy have continued to immerse themselves in invaluable experiences through the Detroit Economic Club (DEC). In addition to their initial visit, the students have participated in three more DEC events, listening to distinguished speakers and engaging in thought-provoking discussions. These opportunities allow our students to expand their leadership skills and explore real-world issues beyond the classroom.
October 7: Ali Velshi, MSNBC Chief Correspondent – "Small Acts of Courage: A Legacy of Endurance and the Fight for Democracy"
Ali Velshi inspired our students with a deeply personal account, drawing from 125 years of his family's history to discuss the enduring fight for social justice. Velshi's message highlighted the power of small, courageous acts in creating meaningful change and reinvigorating democracy. His passionate call for individual action in the face of adversity resonated with our students, showing them how one person’s commitment can spark broader societal shifts.
October 10: President Donald J. Trump – Economic Policy Address
Our students had the rare opportunity to attend a DEC event featuring the 45th U.S. President and current 2024 Presidential Candidate, Donald J. Trump. In this address, President Trump delved into his economic policy plan, focusing on topics relevant to Detroit's economy and the nation as a whole. The students even had a chance to meet President Trump, capturing memorable moments alongside him. The experience offered a unique insight into political leadership and economic strategy on a national scale.
October 15: University Presidents’ Panel – "Michigan’s Competitive Advantage: Harnessing the Power of the University Research Corridor"
At this event, our students listened as the presidents of Wayne State University, Michigan State University, and the University of Michigan discussed how Michigan’s universities are leading groundbreaking research and driving innovation in industries like artificial intelligence, life sciences, and sustainability. The discussion emphasized the crucial role of the University Research Corridor in the state's economy and provided students with a perspective on how higher education can shape industry futures. Photos include our students with Kimberly Andrews Espy, Ph.D., the president of Wayne State University.
These DEC events have given SCA students firsthand access to prominent leaders in business, government, and academia, further enriching their educational journey. Each event provided a unique learning experience, reinforcing the real-world applications of their studies and encouraging them to think critically about their role in shaping the future.

Original Post:
At St. Catherine of Siena Academy (SCA), we prioritize providing students with real-world opportunities to expand their knowledge and leadership skills. On Monday, September 23, a group of business-interested students, along with Principal Ms. Hehs and Dean of Students Mr. Bumpus, attended a Detroit Economic Club (DEC) event at the Masonic Temple.
The event featured Lael Brainard, Director of the National Economic Council, discussing the administration’s efforts to support the U.S. auto industry. Before the main presentation, our students had the chance to interact with Ms. Brainard during a student reception, where she answered their questions. While none of the students' questions were selected for the general Q&A, the experience gave them valuable insights into economic policy and industry trends.
The DEC’s student programs offer a unique opportunity for SCA students to engage with business and government leaders, gaining exposure to key issues and professional environments. We’re fortunate to have more events lined up for our students in the coming weeks.
Real Opportunities in a Focused Environment
At SCA, we offer tailored opportunities like these, helping students grow into confident leaders. As an all-girls school, we are committed to providing our students with experiences that set them up for future success.
